“Puye Prophecy” – Release Announcement – June 11, 2025

Puye, pronounced Poo-yay, is Tewa Indian for “a place where rabbits gather.” A point of caution: This tale has nothing to do with soft, fluffy, cotton-tail bunny rabbits. Puye is also a place in northern New Mexico where centuries-old Puebloan Cliff Dwellings are located. A high mesa becomes ground zero for everything bizarre that befalls Katherine (Kat) Jackson in this thrilling tale. The story reveals the power in dreams, especially when they are spirit-influenced by an Indian medicine man from 161 years ago.

Kat’s job in Lewisville, Texas, was her life, the center of her world, with barely enough room left over for her older sister, Madeline (Maddie) Jackson, who lived in Phoenix. After the sisters lost their mother three years ago, Kat took it hard and plunged into her work, which consumed her life. One could describe her work/life world as boring as hell, but it filled her days with controlled chaos. Kat thrived in a constant state of turmoil in her role as a Project Manager. She was a control freak who enjoyed the simplicity of no social life by choice and maintained no serious male relationships. The last thing she wanted was complications that would disrupt her need for control, force her plan off track, and suffer the fool who took those things lightly.

Katherine (Kat) Jackson, a 28-year-old Senior Project Manager, was on the fast track to early-onset burnout when her boss, Cassandra (Cassie) McBride, told her to take a week’s break to refresh and recharge, go visit someone, and find something for herself that was not work-related. All of that happened as suggested, but no one knew what had happened involved something hidden in the genetics of her blood, courtesy of her mother’s side of the family, which had been picked up many generations earlier. The influence of dormant DNA became active in a wisp of smoke from a dream, unleashing the spirit presence of an ancient medicine man. Nothing in her life would ever be the same. Refreshed and recharged? Not so much.

The spirit of an ancient Indian medicine man is someone foolish enough to disrupt Kat’s sense of control when he crashes a dream and takes over on an unplanned adventure. No spoilers here, but her life would be forever changed. His name was Big Crow with Little Feet, and when he manifested as a man, he stood nearly seven feet tall, if you included a crumpled top hat that capped long grey braids adorned with colored beads at the ends. He smelled of wood smoke, leaving a wisp of smoke every time he showed up or disappeared, slipping back into the spiritual realm.

Kat thrived on being in control and having solid plans; Big Crow, a disruption of epic proportions, took over physically, affecting a kidnapping, enabling a spiritual union she could neither explain nor prove, and possession of spiritual powers she neither asked for nor wanted. She wanted no part of the adventure Big Crow orchestrated. The relationship that neither wanted began to evolve against their better judgment. Kay did not have a male relationship in her life and did not want one, especially not with some crazy 160-year-old Indian medicine man. Their uncertain relationship hovered somewhere between mysteriously satisfying and deeply terrifying.

Kat’s decision to drive from Lewisville, Texas, to Phoenix to visit her sister spanned 1,064 miles and an unbelievable 161 years packed into 15 hours behind the wheel. Not only did she have ancient DNA in her blood, but Big Crow also facilitated her acquiring the spirit of an Indian woman whose murder Kat witnessed during a dream. Details of the dreams she could not understand became quite vividly real when she learned she was the unwilling carrier of the spirit of Dew on Flowers, or as Big Crow described Kat’s role as the Duwit chonah mowna jawneek, or “carrier of spirits.” The Puye prophecy tasked Big Crow with protecting the carrier of the spirit of Dew on Flowers as he guided the journey to its ultimate completion over 160 years ago, the beginning of the Puye Prophecy.

Protect her from what? From the evil spirits who did not want the prophecy to be fulfilled. For over 160 years, a cabal of evil spirits was tasked to prevent the completion of the prophecy. Kat could, unfortunately, and unknowingly, be collateral damage. For Big Crow to be successful, Kat needed to trust him, and nothing about her psyche would make that easy.

Trust did not come easy until she discovered all the bizarre events were indeed real – she was pregnant. Not only did Kat avoid having a man in her life, but she also vowed to remain childless for the rest of her life. Control and solid plans were not hers to own, so she resolved to control and plan her reactions to what would come at her, some bordering on satisfying and some terrifying.

Author Note:

As with most stories I write, the Relentless Wench Muse, who manages to remain just out of reach, dictates when a story has been told entirely. Several chapters earlier, I tried to end this tale, but Her sweet Australian accent whispered, “There’s more story here, mate!” so…I continued to write until She said it was done.

I hope you enjoyed reading this one!
