Kat never expected Dew on Flowers to drop in from the ether but was not necessarily surprised. She figured it had to happen sooner than later, anticipating a fight over parental rights and privileges of the unborn child. What Kat did not expect was the danger she and her baby were in from evil Indian spirits alerted to her presence when conception took place as she slept in a truck stop plaza parking lot. Nothing remarkable happened to Kat, but the blending of human and Indian spirits at conception sent up flares in the spirit world. Unknown to Kat, she and her unborn baby were marked for termination. Evil spirits would stop at nothing to prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled. What could Dew on Flowers do to save her? A resolution where Kat kept her baby seemed utterly out of reach.

Chapter #14 – Permission
“Yes, Katherine, there are five: the spirit of Big Crow who found you in dreams, my spirit you received from the night of my murder, Shadow Eagle’s spirit seed from your spiritual union at the Puye Ruins, our son who grows in your womb, and…”
Kat reacted abruptly, “OUR son? He’s growing in MY body! Don’t you dare think for a minute he belongs to…”
Dew on Flowers interrupted, “Yes, he is growing in your body, and that’s what is so beautiful about this pregnancy. He could never grow in mine, not until the prophecy is fulfilled. Fulfillment had to involve a blood spirit from this world to consummate the prophecy. Katherine, you are that blood spirit that enabled this to happen. This child growing in you will become a real human baby boy. At the same time, he will have powerful Indian spirits from the fulfilled prophecy. What you are about to accomplish by delivering this unique child has never been done before. Can’t you see the beauty in that?”
Kat did not answer with words but laid her hand on Dew on Flowers’s resting on her belly.
“His spirit…this little boy’s combined spirits…will be strong and make him unique among men. Living with such a strong spirit will take a challenging commitment because he will be different. The challenge will not be your failure to love him…but your ability to protect him. Katherine, there are dark, evil spirit forces that do not want this birth to occur. Many odds are facing you and this child for your pregnancy to complete.”
Kat pushed Dew’s hand off her abdomen, teeing off on only part of what she heard, and said harshly, “You don’t know me or what kind of commitment I’m capable of…”
Dew on Flowers interrupted again, “Please allow me to finish the story. There is more for you to understand that will answer the question you asked earlier about why I am here,” placing her hand back on Kat’s belly.
A frustrated Kat exhaled her impatience, “I thought you said five spirits,” having counted only four of the spirits Dew on Flowers described.
“Yes, and the fifth spirit is why the other four matter. Katherine, the role of your spirit as Duwit chonah mowna jawneek is fulfilling the prophecy. None of this would have happened without your commitment to be the spirit carrier and endure the trauma and sacrifices to see it through.”
Kat went from calm to angry and back several times, and the emotional shifts spilled over into worried tears, “What will happen to my baby?” placing her hand back over Dew on Flowers’s.
“Your child will grow into a strong young man and be a leader among men. Nothing changes that,” assured Dew on Flowers.
“Okay, Dew, we’ve gone full circle now from my baby…to our baby…and now back to my baby. Which is it? I need to know.”
Dew said softly, “The answer is why I am here. Please permit me to finish the story.”
“Well?” Kat said impatiently.
“I am here, as is Big Crow with Little Feet, to protect you and the unborn child. Earlier this day, you experienced an attack by two evil men. They tracked you since the moment of conception, the joining of spirits, as you slept in the truck stop parking lot. Those men were not fully men; they were spirits with evil intentions to end your pregnancy…to stop the prophecy. This child you are carrying is at risk, and that means you are at risk as well. Your role as Duwit chonah mowna jawneek will not end until his birth and will mark you and him as vulnerable until then.
In your human world, your spirit carrier role would be viewed as pure fantasy, but your role is very real in the spirit world, and you are known by good and evil spirits alike. This unborn child is known because the prophecy is known. You are marked as a threat to the realm of the evil spirits in my world, and you will be under threat and hunted to protect the evil they relish. They will not rest until the prophecy is broken.”
Kat gently squeezed Dew on Flowers’s hand. She began to cry silently as tears flowed freely. Through uneven breaths, she said, “I never wanted this…not any of this. The life of a mother, having a child, hah! I never wanted or even considered that as a remote option. Trust me, I fought with the decision to terminate this pregnancy the morning after. Maybe I should have.
I never knew the story behind the prophecy and why I willingly went through so much that was counter to who I thought I was and the limits of my morals. Now you say evil spirits track me. Oh, hell no, I can barely tolerate the good spirits – no offense – but I want no parts of evil, and I want the same for my child.”
Kat sniffed and wiped at tears with the heel of her hand, never removing her other hand from Dew on Flowers.
“Dew, I was nobody,” she confessed; tears continued, spilling across her nose as she looked deeply into Dew of Flowers’s eyes. “I was nobody in the human world and certainly not on the radar of these so-called evil spirits before getting sucked into this prophecy mess. I pray to return to being a nobody again, but this time, I want to be a nobody who has a little boy in her life, and I want both of us to be free of spirit threats. If you can grant wishes, that would be mine.”
Dew of Flowers touched Kat’s cheek to wipe away tears gently. “Would the elimination of all connections to Indian spirits be an answer to your prayer?” Kat pressed Dew’s tear-stained fingers against her cheek.
“You could do that?” asked Kat in disbelief, quickly adding, “But wait. What would happen to my baby? How would it change him?”
Dew on Flowers flexed her hand lightly on Kat’s belly and said, “I do not want the little boy growing under our hands. He forever belongs to you. I only want to retrieve the powerful forces of the Indian spirits that define his bloodline in the spirit world. Those spirit connections are vulnerable to evil, and as long as those spirits remain in you, you are marked and at significant risk. They will keep coming and put you and your human baby at risk. They will put my spirit baby at risk at the cost of your baby’s life and possibly your own.
“But only one baby is growing in my womb,” protested Kat, not fully grasping any solution that would not impact her baby boy and fearful of where this would go.
“That is precisely why I am here,” said Dew on Flowers. “His Indian spirit-being is separate from his human spirit-being. If you wish, I can remove the Indian spirits from your body. I can protect you and your unborn baby by separating you and him from the Indian spirits in your womb. The evil spirits do not want you, and they do not want the human spirit of your child. They only want the Indian spirits made possible by the fulfillment of the prophecy.”
“I can’t believe this,” said Kat. “What about your spirit baby?”
“He will live in the spirit world with me and his father, Shadow Eagle, and he will have the chance to thrive by the power of his own spirit. Your bloodline role as Duwit chonah mowna jawneek will end and be known only by whomever you choose to tell. And as I said, your son will be born healthy and whole to you and become a strong leader of men. He will lose nothing and no longer have any Indian spirit connections. He will only possess his human spirit and yours as his mother. The Indian bloodline history will remain known only to you and whomever you tell. Evil Indian spirits will no longer have an interest in you nor any interest in your son.”
“This sounds too good to be true,” said Kat in disbelief.
“It’s true, but until I remove the spirits from you, the risks remain,” reiterated Dew on Flowers. “I can only remove the threat if you give me permission.”
Kat was one permission away from removing threats she did not entirely believe were real and hesitated, “What about my ancient Puye bloodline and that of my son when he is born? Won’t we remain spiritually connected?”
“Yes, you will, but there will no longer be the presence of the prophecy, making you a target of evil. Your son will have the same spiritual bloodline connections as you, but he will only learn what that means if you tell him.” Explained Dew of Flowers.
Kat remained silent as she thought about the future, “I can see sharing some of the history when he grows up and wonders who his father is, but that’s another problem for another day.” Kat reached out and stroked Dew of Flowers’s cheek. “How do we do this, Dew?”
“May I hold you in my arms?” asked Dew on Flowers softly.
Kat considered the request for only a second before making eye contact, which released a warm glow of intimacy that permeated her heart with longing. She desperately wanted to be in Dew on Flowers’s arms and agreed by saying, “Yes…but only if I may hold you in mine.”
The space between them disappeared, each wrapping the other in an affectionate embrace. Dew on Flowers whispered, “Thank you, Katherine,” and kissed her lips lightly, sending Kat into a deep, dreamless sleep.
