071325 – Author Thoughts on Time Travel in “Mirror Mirror”
I mentioned yesterday that I was not a fan of stories where time travel was the primary focus. In Mirror Mirror, the use of time travel takes the form of shifting timelines. The interdimensional flavor in this story has changes of timelines, either into the future or the past. Keep in mind, time does not move linearly. Shifting a timeline not only turns the clock ahead or behind, but it also changes the destination’s moment in a new universe, on a parallel timeline. In our logical thinking, it’s easy to envision where shifting would take us and maybe even why, but the only thing identical in this shifted destination is what we see, and nothing is as it seems, which adds significant potential for danger.
Now take that visual image and place it into a parallel universe, where everything looks familiar, and it should, it’s the same place…BUT…in another life timeline that runs in parallel. You are there, but so is your other self on a different but parallel timeline. How many parallel universes, or timelines, are there? That’s a good question. The answer may stretch more than your imagination, but hey, this is fiction, and you may never get to see or understand the ghost in the machine. Somewhere in dimensions six through ten, there’s probably an answer, but it’s above my pay grade, and it adds no value to my story. Did I mention this was fiction?
Shifting from one timeline to another, as Sandy finds out, is easy if one has an 11-D entity orchestrating the travel. That assumes, of course, that the 11-D entity behind the wheel is as competent at shepherding travel as he is intellectually, and as Sandy learns, accuracy has a significant margin of error. She also learned she could play a good game of cat and mouse with law enforcement, should the necessity to make a quick exit arise. But as we know, every game comes to an end, but does it really?
