Melissa Merriweather and Sandy Tillman pulled into the long driveway of the Hawthorne Estate and were struck by the conditions of the overgrown grounds and a massive house obviously neglected, not to mention how the whole visual looked haunted as hell. Three years earlier, Mel’s grandfather, Marcus T. Hawthorne III, was found dead in a secret room adjacent to the library. The discovery led to an investigation that was deemed a murder that was never solved, leaving much to the imagination and too many nefarious rumors. Mel was unsettled and wanted nothing to do with the place.
Sandy, on the other hand, was excited to explore Hawthorne House before the party that she anticipated would be the Halloween party of the century. Pleading disbelief, she asked, “Just look at this place, Mel. It’s perfect, and you’ve never been inside?
“Never,” replied Melissa, “and not sure I want to go in now. My reclusive grandfather was a spooky old man of questionable character and was a perfect fit for this… this dump,” dismissing the massive structure with a swipe of her hand. “For all I know, it’s haunted. The only improvement I can see is an accidental fire. Mel had no idea how prophetic her off-handed comment would be.
