What Big Crow with Little Feet saw were two men dressed completely in black standing over the crumpled form of an unconscious Katherine on the floor of the landing. The men were not men at all; they were evil spirits who came to eliminate the possibility of the prophecy coming to pass. Katherine and the baby she carried in her womb had to die.
Big Crow became more than a guide; he became a protector when he broke the necks of Kat’s attackers, shortly before they evaporated back into the ether. When Kat regained consciousness, Big Crow’s powerful arms carried her. Up until this point, he had never touched her.
Up until this point, she never wanted him to touch her. Now she clung to his heavy topcoat, which smelled of smoke, burying her face in his chest and not wanting to be anywhere else.
