Embrace the Silence
Silence drowns out any other sounds that could soothe with ordinary, which is no longer, hurled out with familiar routines wrapped in the loss of a loved one. Thoughts are in disarray, stretched to breaking over the fresh impact of loss, familiar routines seem pointless, and a steady bombardment of memories that struggle to hold on to a life that’s gone. Sanity is held hostage by a past that is forever out of reach, yet vivid memories remind what was lost. No balance. Hope stolen.
Welcome to grief, a lifetime companion.
There is no escaping it.
There is no end – no expiration date.
But one thing will change: “Perspective.”
Perspective does not eliminate the pain of loss, but it does one thing anyone grieving must fight to protect: “Memories.”
Memories, good and bad, are part of a life story that will only continue in the hearts of those closest and have more value than gold. The value of the love remembered is the only reason grief showed up in the first place. Grief is caused by love, and those memories preserve that emotional connection.
The grief of loss will evolve into precious memories of love that will continue in the heart, where sharp edges soften over time.
There is a scripture that captures the essence of what things should be first thoughts…
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable …if anything is excellent or praiseworthy …think about such things. Whatever you have learned or heard from me or seen in me …put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
