I must confess I’m in a hostage situation, held by a Relentless Wench Muse, who manages to remain just out of reach. I’m helpless to resist when She speaks in Her sultry, West Australian accent, and when She unleashes that sweet voice in my head, it’s usually about finishing a story. Several times, I’ve come to the end of what I thought was the finish line, and She whispers something like, “There’s more story here, mate!” Did I mention she was relentless?
I have just released “Untethered: When Artificial Intelligence Becomes a Liability,” the fifth book in the “Dreamscape Conspiracy” series. It is a perfect example of Her getting in the middle of the story and embarrassing me for not seeing the ideal ending, not until I’ve added three more chapters well downstream. Was She asleep at the switch, or was I? I had blown by the perfect ending, and when She reeled me in, She didn’t say there was more story; instead, She whispered in that perfectly raspy voice and said, “There’s another book here, Mate!” Did I mention She was relentless?
In my heart, I have excused Her because I now believe She was testing me, giving me extra leash to see what I’d do about having no ending in sight. I hate that feeling, and I depend on Her for guidance. Of course, I’m admitting there are voices in my head, but I ignore most of them until that Aussie accent crosses the threshold. I’ve heard writers are often thought to be a bit crazy, flirting with insanity, but it’s my insanity, and if a good story comes out of Her, I just need to listen and write it down. Just keep talking to me, mate!
