CEO for a Day…Epilogue

The organization needs a myth buster. Is that the CEO re-thinking where to focus precious resources to enable and accelerate productivity? Is it a new role like Chief Productivity Officer? Grand Poohbah of Performance? Regardless of what the title becomes, there is an acute need to look beyond Learning to actual Performance with focused attention and priority.

Workflow Learning is getting a lot of press these days, and that’s a good thing because it is bringing learning closer to Point-of-Work. BUT…it’s still wrapped in the myth. If my L&D mission is limited to enabling learning without a direct catalyst of specific performance at Point-of-Work and measurable evidence of impact as business outcomes, then we’ve not overcome the myth…we’ve just put more lipstick on it.

Pros and Cons of Virtual Knowledge-Sharing Venues for Onboarding

All told, the Virtual Knowledge-Sharing approach was successful, especially when a geographically dispersed audience is on the receiving end. Hopefully, the list of key learnings provided here offer some help and crash-avoidance tactics should your team go down this path. Our audience satisfaction and engagement scores were bright points despite a less than optimized launch. Even sub-optimized the participants loved it because it was interactive start-to-finish. We learned and adjusted, and things only became more impactful as sessions continued. Last thought: Do not under-estimate how critical the context of “When, Why, & How” is to a newbie going through on-boarding.

Is L&D Held Hostage by Learning?

We (L&D) could prove knowledge transfer…also known as “potential”…at completion of our learning events, but we were not focused on nor were we equipped to implement that learning downstream at Point-of-Work where “effective and sustainable performance” SHOULD manifest. Just ask the Help Desk staff blown out with an avalanche of post-training questions. Just ask the Procurement staff pulled off task to isolate and recycle bogus requests due to data field entry errors. Just ask the HR staff buried in Manager Self-Service confusion. Just ask the frustrated end-users who fought through delays in getting help at their moments of need…and there were plenty. Did we ultimately implement and slog toward full adoption? Yes…but at what cost?

Who Owns POINT-of-WORK?

After chasing this performance discipline for the last 12 years or so, I’ve come to the conclusion that Point-of-Work is jointly owned by L&D and the primary stakeholders positioned in functional operational roles in the organization. These are the stakeholders who own the responsibility to produce, protect, and maintain profitability and are compensated to do so successfully. Does L&D have that same degree of skin in the game? Too often L&D is only considered as a cost center. Impact at Point-of-Work tied to L&D contribution is sorely needed and ownership would help bridge that gap from being an expense to a value contributor.

7-Right Things Infographic – Download

I’m a big fan of reducing redundant work and these RIGHT THINGS provide a structure to optimize short-form assets to enable productivity acceleration at the Point-of-Work. Optimization is tied directly to identification of performance restrainers via the PWA.

POINT-of-WORK: Strategic Transformational Change VS. Tactical Redeployment

From a strategic point of view, Point-of-Work should not be viewed as a tactical destination for learning solutions; rather, Point-of-Work should be embraced as a”tipping point for Value Generation”…generation of sustainable workforce performance…generation of business value…or scrutinized as a place where value generation is compromised by deficient performance…or restrained productivity…or tangible loss…or business liability…all of which have the potential to directly impact the bottom-line. The good, bad and ugly only manifest at Point-of-Work and a sound strategy should be an enabling strategy with evolved tactics and technology as defined by the unique attributes of the ecosystem.

7-Right Things for Intentional Design to Be Intentional Enough

So…does Intentional Design threaten the ID role? Just the opposite – it expands the role into new asset development that can be re-used or re-purposed to decrease actual development time by following a Create Once – Use Many Times mindset. In some ways one could consider intentional design as replacement therapy…replacing long-form learning with short-form solution assets that can serve multiple roles both at Point-of-Work (Moments 3,4 & 5) and at Point-of-Entry (Moments 1 & 2).

Is Your Culture Hard-Wired for Performance or a Catalyst for Dysfunction?

<Rant Warning> Here’s an icebreaker for the next C-suite pow-wow in your organization. With all the CXO roles present around the table, and each having a single sheet of paper, ask them to complete this sentence with one or two words. “I would characterize our organization as one operating in a culture of ___________.” Have […]

Insight Curation: Are We Accelerating or Protecting Productivity?

By now content curation is a well-known activity that is credited for saving time in the search, retrieval and distribution of bulk knowledge/information. The quality of those well-intended distributions, often via email attachments, or postings to knowledge bases, or communities of practice forums, or corporate shared drives, or SharePoint…or…or…or…are somewhat scattered. The aggregate of “time saved” rapidly dilutes as a function of what happens after the distributions are sent/posted and received by knowledge workers. That’s Point-of-Work, and that’s where we can accelerate and protect productivity.

SMEs or BMEs at Point-of-Work?

When completing a Point-of-Work Assessment (PWA) we have the opportunity to dig for details specific to task-level work activity and the restrainers of the performance related to that work. Do we rely upon Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) or should we seek out Business Matter Experts (BMEs)?
